About Church of St Wilfrid, Standish

The Church of St Wilfrid, Standish, is an active Church of England parish church in Wigan, Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Diocese of Blackburn and is designated Grade I for its exceptional historic and architectural importance.

Although documented by 1205, the church may have considerably earlier origins, as it once served a large parish containing eleven townships. The present building largely dates from a reconstruction undertaken in 1582–84, probably to designs by Lawrence Shipway, combining Gothic and Renaissance elements. Its Elizabethan nave and chancel are built from yellow-black gritstone, while the nineteenth-century tower uses grey-black ashlar and carries a prominent spire with an octagonal bell stage. Inside, an elaborate Tudor timber roof spans the nave, aisles and chancel, with individually varied bosses. Restoration of the Victorian spire was completed in 2025, including repairs to its stonework and timber frame and refurbishment of the clock and weather vane.
