The Catholic Church of St. Jude is an active Roman Catholic parish church in Worsley Mesnes, Wigan, at the corner of Poolstock Lane and St Paul’s Avenue. Completed in 1965, it is protected as a Grade II listed building and forms part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool’s Wigan pastoral area. The parish incorporated St Joseph’s in 1995 and united with nearby St Aidan’s, Winstanley, in 2017.
It began with a temporary timber chapel established in 1959 for Catholics moving to new estates around Poolstock and Worsley Mesnes. Work on the permanent Brutalist church started in 1963, using brick and reinforced concrete, with strengthened foundations required because of mining subsidence. Its broad, fan-like plan is complemented by a circular baptistry and concrete fins supporting a cross. Interior features include Hans Unger’s large Crucifixion mosaic, gold-backed mosaics illustrating Christ’s journey to Calvary, and Robin Riley’s abstract dalle de verre windows in greens, reds, yellows and blues.
