About St Mary's
St Mary’s is a Church of England parish church situated on Newton Road in Warrington, Greater Manchester. Its ecclesiastical administration places it in Winwick deanery, under Warrington archdeaconry and Liverpool diocese.
Plans for the church followed the opening of Knott’s Mill in 1850, when local mill employees lived far from St Luke’s and attended early services at the Church Inn. Lancaster architect Edward Graham Paley designed the building, constructed during 1859–61 for £1,073.75. The Bishop of Chester consecrated it on 21 November 1861, and it originally accommodated 345 worshippers. The aisle-free interior is fronted by a west window divided into three lights, with supporting buttresses and an arched double bellcote above. A choir vestry was introduced during the 1961 centenary. Rushworth and Dreaper made the two-manual organ in 1932, before David Wells rebuilt it in 1988. Four military graves lie in the churchyard.
