About St. Peter's Church
St. Peter's Church is an active Church of England parish church in St Peters Square, Stockport, Greater Manchester. The town has only one parish church older than this one. It belongs to Chester Diocese and has Grade II listed status. Its worship follows the Anglo-Catholic tradition associated with the nineteenth-century Oxford Movement.
William Wright funded the original church in 1768. A gallery followed in 1838, while the apse dates from work undertaken in 1888–89. Built of brick, the church comprises a nave, chancel and three-level western tower. Its upper bell stage has eight sides, and rounded windows appear in both the tower and nave. Inside are a white marble font, memorial tablets for Wright and two early vicars, and communion vessels from 1768. The single bell also bears that date. A working clock made by John Whitehurst was installed shortly after opening and is reputed to be Greater Manchester’s earliest functioning public clock.
