About St Mary's Church, Cheadle
St Mary’s Church, Cheadle is an active Church of England parish church in Stockport, Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Diocese of Chester and shares a benefice with St Cuthbert’s. The church has Grade I listed status and follows the conservative evangelical tradition within the Church of England.
Christian worship has taken place on the site since at least 1200. Most of the present grey sandstone building dates from 1520 to 1550, with the south chapel finished in 1530 and the nave in 1541. Designed throughout in the Perpendicular Gothic style, it has a battlemented three-stage western tower, aisles, two chapels and a broad chancel. Substantial rebuilding and restoration occurred from 1859 to 1862, followed by further work in 1878–80. Features include medieval screen material, historic brasses and effigies, stained glass by Christopher and Veronica Whall, an 1881 Hill and Son organ, and eight bells.
