About St Joseph's Catholic Church

St Joseph's Catholic Church serves a Roman Catholic parish in Stockport, Greater Manchester, and stands on Tatton Street. The church continues to support parish worship and has statutory protection at Grade II. Since 2022 it has also served the Shrewsbury diocese as a shrine centred on the Eucharist, with opportunities for adoration alongside its regular parish activities.

Stockport’s Catholic congregation expanded in the early 1800s as mill employment drew additional workers to the town. Matthew Ellison Hadfield and George Goldie designed Catholic schools erected in Tatton Street in 1858. Work on the present church began after William Turner, then Bishop of Salford, placed its foundation stone in 1861. Hadfield designed the building, which was finished the following year. His 1862 watercolour of the interior looking towards the western end remains displayed in the nave. A related industrial school was constructed south of the earlier school premises in 1888, with financial assistance from the fifteenth Duke of Norfolk.
