About St George's Church
St George’s Church stands on Buxton Road in Heaviley, Stockport, Greater Manchester. It remains an active Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Chester, with a benefice shared with St Gabriel’s, Adswood. The church is recognised as a Grade I listed building.
Hubert Austin of Paley, Austin and Paley designed the church, whose foundation stone was placed in 1893 before its consecration in February 1897. Built from red Runcorn sandstone, it combines Perpendicular architecture with Art Nouveau elements. Its central tower and spire reach 236 feet, while large seven-light windows mark the east and west ends. Inside are an alabaster reredos and font carved by Robert Bridgeman, together with stained glass by Shrigley and Hunt. The organ dates from 1897 and was rebuilt in 1936, with further work completed in 1981. Ten bells, cast at Whitechapel in 1896, hang in the tower.
