About St Luke's Church, Salford
St Luke’s Church, Salford is a Church of England parish church situated above Liverpool Street in Pendleton. It serves the parish covering Weaste, Seedley and Langworthy, within Salford All Saints Team Ministry and the Diocese of Manchester. Granted Grade II* protection in 1980, the church is now included on the national register of historic buildings at risk following roof leaks.
George Gilbert Scott created the Neo-Gothic design, and the church began welcoming worshippers in 1865. Sandstone rubble forms the walls, while plain tiles cover the roof. Inside are a clerestoried nave flanked by aisles, a rounded apse and a tower resting on broad cylindrical pillars whose capitals are carved. The elaborately treated chancel ceiling and stained glass, including examples by Charles Eamer Kempe, are notable features. A chapel honouring early supporter Edward Tootal was built beside the chancel in 1878. William Hill & Sons supplied the 1865 organ; its 1947 reconstruction commemorated local people who died in the Second World War.
