About St John's Church, Mosley Common
St John’s Church, Mosley Common is an active Church of England parish church in Mosley Common, Salford, Greater Manchester. It belongs to Leigh deanery, within the Archdeaconry of Salford and the Diocese of Manchester. The church shares a united benefice with St George’s and St Stephen’s, serving Astley, Tyldesley and Mosley Common.
Local worship began in a school associated with Ellenbrook Chapel’s mission in the early nineteenth century. Construction was funded by £4,250 from subscribers, while the Bridgewater Trustees donated the land. The Countess of Ellesmere set the foundation stone in place on 14 February 1885, and the building opened in 1886 as a chapel serving Tyldesley parish. Mosley Common gained its own parish in 1894, followed by the church’s consecration in 1895. Built from Yorkshire freestone in a Gothic Revival design, it comprises a nave, aisles and chancel. Donated furnishings include its bells, lectern, font, reredos and pulpit.
