About St James' Church, Higher Broughton
St James' Church, Higher Broughton stands beside Great Cheetham Street East in Salford, Greater Manchester. It remains in use as an Anglican parish church within Manchester Diocese, under Salford’s deanery and archdeaconry. The parish shares a benefice with St John the Evangelist, Broughton, and the united parish of St Clement and St Matthias, Lower Broughton.
Construction took place from 1877 until 1879 to plans by the Lancaster practice Paley and Austin, part of the firm later known as Sharpe, Paley and Austin. Samuel Clowes provided the plot and £2,800 of the projected £7,000 expense. Initially offering room for 600 people, the interior was altered around 1970 when a partition separated the northern aisle from the main body. The fabric is brick, including the decorative window framework. Distinctive elements include strong buttressing, sharply rising gable ends and an elevated bellcote over the nave’s eastern extremity. Nave openings are pointed, whereas the chancel windows have level tops.
