About Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, Manchester
The Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, Manchester, stands on Bury New Road in Salford. It remains an active place of worship, with Sunday liturgies serving a community that includes Greek and British Cypriots and students. The adjoining hall accommodates a Greek school and gatherings marking Orthodox feasts. The church has held Grade II listed status since 1980.
Manchester’s Greek community resolved to establish a permanent place of worship in 1843, after previously meeting in temporary premises. Construction at Broughton began with the laying of the foundation stone in 1860 and finished in 1861. Clegg & Knowles designed the classical basilica, whose ashlar frontage has a Corinthian portico. Further classical detailing appears along the sides, while the polygonal apse survives at the rear. The iconostasis includes paintings by Theodoros Vryzakis. Dry rot led to the original dome being replaced with a pitched roof in 1962. Repairs to the roof, stonework, lintels and leadwork began in 2009 with heritage funding.
