About Church of St Mary the Virgin, Eccles
The Church of St Mary the Virgin stands in Eccles, within Salford, Greater Manchester. It remains a Church of England parish church and belongs to the Diocese of Manchester. Designated Grade I in 1964, it forms part of the Eccles team benefice alongside churches in Eccles, Monton and Patricroft.
A place of worship has stood here since at least the Norman period, while the present building dates from around 1250. Thirteenth-century fabric survives at the foot of the tower and at the western end of the northern aisle. The building was extended during the fifteenth century, and its sixteenth-century chancel was reconstructed to designs by J. P. Holden in 1862. Red dressed sandstone and slate are used throughout. Architectural features include a three-tier western tower, battlements, buttresses, a four-bay nave and a south transept formerly used as a chantry. A sixteenth-century window depicting Christ’s entry into Jerusalem came from Rouen and was transferred to Eccles in 1929.
