About St John the Baptist's Church, Smallbridge
St John the Baptist's Church, Smallbridge stands on Halifax Road in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Formerly an Anglican parish church, it became redundant in March 2008 following a fall in congregation numbers. The building is protected at Grade II.
Completed in 1834 to plans by Lewis Vulliamy, the church received £3,253 from the Church Building Commission. Its Gothic Revival structure is faced in ashlar and roofed with slate. An eight-bay nave leads to a short chancel, while the west front has stepped lancets, porches and a tall bellcote with clocks and louvred openings. Cast-iron columns support internal galleries. Notable details include an angelic choir painted above the chancel arch, elaborately carved wooden furnishings, poppyhead pews and a canopied priest’s chair fitted with a misericord. The stained glass incorporates an eighteenth-century roundel by William Wailes.
