About St John the Baptist Church, Rochdale
St John the Baptist Church, Rochdale is an active Roman Catholic parish church near the town centre, at the junction of Maclure Road and Dowling Street. It shares a parish with St Gabriel and the Angels in Castleton. Completed in 1927, the church is recognised as a Grade II* listed building.
Catholic worship in Rochdale dates from 1824, initially taking place in warehouse premises. The parish was established in 1830, following the opening of an earlier church in Ann Street. That building was replaced in brick in 1860, before work on the present, larger church began in 1925. Henry Oswald Hill designed its Byzantine Revival form, drawing inspiration from Hagia Sophia and Westminster Cathedral. A planned bell tower was not constructed. The sanctuary mosaic, created between 1930 and 1933 by Manchester craftspeople to an Eric Newton design, depicts the theme of eternal life.
