About Parish Church of St Chad, Rochdale
The Parish Church of St Chad, Rochdale is an active Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Manchester. Standing above Rochdale Town Hall and the centre of the town, it also serves surrounding suburbs as a place of worship and community activity. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building and is reached from the town by 124 steps.
Founded by 1170, perhaps where an earlier Anglo-Saxon church once stood, it served as the principal church of Rochdale’s historic parish. Medieval elements include 13th-century arcades with round and octagonal piers, alongside a tower arch dating from the 14th century. Extensive Victorian work shaped much of the present building: the aisles were reconstructed, the tower gained an elaborate bell stage, and J. S. Crowther enlarged and rebuilt the chancel between 1883 and 1885. Memorials include a grey-and-white marble monument to James and Dorothea Holte. The former town stocks remain in the churchyard.
