About Westwood Moravian Church
Westwood Moravian Church is a former Moravian place of worship in the Westwood district of Oldham, Greater Manchester. The congregation sold the Middleton Road property in 2005 and relocated to Royton, but the church erected in 1869 remains standing.
The congregation was established in 1865 to serve Moravians living in the growing industrial neighbourhood. Its first chapel soon proved inadequate, prompting construction of a larger church, which opened in May 1869. The road-facing elevation has a gabled central entrance, rounded arches and piers topped by pinnacles. Galleries were reached by stair bays on either side. Extensive alterations in 1924 added vestries and oak fittings, including choir seating, a pulpit, communion furniture and a war memorial screen. A font followed in 1932. The church’s 1903 George Benson organ used water-powered bellows before receiving an electric blower in 1923; it was dismantled after closure. Several furnishings and memorial items were transferred to Royton.
