About Salem Moravian Church
Salem Moravian Church was a Moravian congregation in Clarksfield, Oldham, Greater Manchester. It remained at Lees Road until its final service on 21 August 2022, when the building closed. The congregation then joined with the Moravian church in Royton.
Moravian ministry in the Oldham area began in 1772, with preaching at Greenacres and later a preaching station at Clarksfield. During the 1820s, John Lees provided a large room for regular services, with ministers travelling from Fairfield and Dukinfield. He and two brothers later funded a chapel with two schoolrooms. Its foundation stones were laid on 28 June 1824, and James Liley opened and consecrated the chapel on 7 August 1825. A resident minister arrived in 1827. Salem also helped establish a Moravian congregation at Westwood in 1865. The original chapel was eventually replaced by a church building dating from the late twentieth century.
