About Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Patrick Church
Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Patrick Church is a Roman Catholic parish church at 40 Union Street West in central Oldham, Greater Manchester. Standing at the junction with John Street, close to Oldham Sixth Form College, the church remains in parish use and has Grade II listed status. St Mary’s Church is served from here as part of the same parish.
Founded in 1858 as an auxiliary place of worship for St Mary’s, it became a separate church in 1862 as the Catholic congregation grew. John Lees Ainsworth provided the Union Street site, and the foundation stone was placed in March 1869. Oldham architect Thomas Mitchell designed the Gothic Revival building, which was constructed by Finnegans of Manchester and opened for its first Mass in June 1870. George Goldie designed a high altar and reredos added in 1873. Further alterations in 1906 and 1907 introduced new flooring, side altars, confessionals, altar rails, seating and a side porch.
