About St Michael's Church
St Michael’s Church stands on Townley Street in Middleton, Greater Manchester. It remains a Church of England parish church, serving within the Diocese of Manchester through the Rochdale archdeaconry and the local deanery covering Heywood and Middleton. The building has Grade II listed status.
Construction took place in stages. Austin and Paley of Lancaster designed the church, with the eastern section and one nave bay completed in 1901–02 on the site of an 1839 predecessor. The remaining nave followed in 1911, while the tower was erected from 1926 to 1931. Built of stone beneath a tiled roof, the church follows the Perpendicular Gothic style. Its layout includes a four-bay clerestoried nave, aisles, chancel, chapel, vestry and organ chamber. Notable elements include the near-detached four-stage tower, an angled baptistry at the western end, octagonal arcade piers and stained glass largely created by Shrigley and Hunt.
