About Wheler Street Moravian Church
Wheler Street Moravian Church was a Moravian congregation in Higher Openshaw, Manchester. Established in 1899 following outreach from Fairfield Moravian Settlement in nearby Droylsden, it served the area for 110 years. Membership had fallen to around thirty in its later years, and the congregation closed in 2009 because of declining numbers, demographic changes and the cost of further development.
The original church was an iron building measuring 44 by 24 feet, with space for almost 220 worshippers. It included a porch, a small vestry, four windows along each side and a rose window. Worship began there in November 1899. A further building was added in 1912, while a brick church replaced the iron structure by 1929. The earlier building was demolished in 1964, and an extension was completed three years later. The congregation also formed the first Scout troop attached to a Moravian church in the United Kingdom.
