About Upper Brook Street Chapel, Manchester
Upper Brook Street Chapel, Manchester is a former place of worship in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Greater Manchester. The Grade II* listed building has served Unitarian and Welsh Baptist congregations, Jehovah’s Witnesses and an Islamic community. Following restoration and conversion in 2017, it now provides student accommodation.
Built from 1837 to 1839, the sandstone chapel was designed by Charles Barry in the English Gothic Revival style and has a slate roof. Its seven slender bays feature lancet windows and buttresses, while the west front includes a large decorated arch above the entrance. A rose window marks the eastern end, and pinnacles rise from the square corner sections. The interior originally contained galleries along three sides beneath a rib-vaulted ceiling. A two-storey Sunday school, added in 1877, follows the same architectural style. After years of deterioration and partial demolition in 2006, the surviving structure was restored as part of its new use.
