About Union Baptist Chapel
Union Baptist Chapel was a Baptist place of worship in Fallowfield, Manchester, Greater Manchester. It stood on Oxford Road, near York Place Road and facing Whitworth Park. The chapel no longer had an independent congregation after its members united with those of Fallowfield Baptist Church in 1949, creating the present Baptist Union Chapel in Fallowfield.
The congregation began in 1842 and initially gathered in another chapel near Grafton Street. Alexander Maclaren, a Scottish minister, was appointed in 1858, and the Oxford Road building opened in 1869. It could accommodate 1,500 people and was frequently full during Maclaren’s 45 years of ministry. Its fiftieth anniversary was marked in 1919. Bombing caused severe damage in 1940, prompting joint services with Fallowfield Baptist Church from 1941 and eventually leading to the merger.
