About Stephen Joseph Studio
Stephen Joseph Studio stands in Greenheys, Manchester, and was formerly a place of worship for German Protestants. Today, the 1895 building belongs to the University of Manchester and supports teaching within its drama department. It includes seven classrooms with a combined capacity of 179 students.
The German Protestant community was recorded in the city in 1858, several decades before the present church was constructed. The university took over the premises in 1949 and put them to a succession of purposes before drama teaching became established there. The main doorway faces west, a secondary access is positioned on the northern side, and the eastern elevation contains a circular window with radiating tracery. Its current name honours Stephen Joseph, who helped develop theatre performed with an audience surrounding the stage.
