About St Nicholas

St Nicholas is a Church of England church at 408 Kingsway in Burnage, Manchester. Recognised for its architectural importance, it has been protected at Grade II* since 10 October 1980 and serves the local parish.

Built between 1930 and 1932, the church was designed in a Modernist style by the practice of Lander and Welch with architect N. F. Cachemaille-Day. Its tall, sculptural brick exterior features German-influenced horizontal and vertical grooves and ribs. Inside, clear glazing and undecorated walls contrast with a coffered ceiling coloured blue, red and gold. Cachemaille-Day added a western bay in 1964. Extensive conservation took place from 2001 to 2003, costing more than £1 million. This work created offices and further meeting areas, including a circular glass room suspended above floor level to preserve the interior’s spatial character.
