About St Michael and All Angels' Church, Howe Bridge
St Michael and All Angels' Church, Howe Bridge, is an active Church of England parish church on Leigh Road, near Atherton in Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Diocese of Manchester and shares a team ministry with three neighbouring churches. The church has held Grade II* listed status since 1996 and continues to provide Sunday and weekday services.
Built from 1875 to 1877, the church was designed by Lancaster architects Paley and Austin for a local colliery company, with Ralph Fletcher funding the £7,000 cost. It was consecrated in February 1877 and received its own parish the following year. The cruciform building combines coursed masonry with red Runcorn sandstone details and tiled roofs. Its crossing carries an octagonal flèche and slender spire. Inside are a vaulted stone chancel, a marble reredos from 1903, iron screens and pulpit installed in 1919, and stained glass largely by C. E. Kempe. A three-manual Rushworth and Dreaper organ dates from 1932.
