About St Mary's Church, Manchester
St Mary’s Church, Manchester was formerly an Anglican place of worship in Manchester, Greater Manchester. The building was pulled down in 1891 after its congregation had declined and its condition had worsened. Parsonage Gardens, a protected urban open space, now occupies the ground where the church and neighbouring Parsonage House once stood.
Manchester Collegiate Church established St Mary’s in response to rapid population growth during the early Industrial Revolution. Parliamentary authority was secured and construction began in 1753, with consecration following three years later. Designed in a restrained Doric manner, the building featured a tower approximately 180 feet tall. Above it rose an eight-column Ionic lantern supporting a spire, making the structure the highest in Manchester at that date. A storm damaged the spire in 1824; it was subsequently reduced in height before being taken down altogether in 1854. The church received separate parish status in 1839, ceased routine worship in 1887 and finally shut in 1890.
