About St Lawrence's Church, Denton

St Lawrence’s Church, Denton, is an active Church of England parish church situated beside Town Lane in Denton, within Greater Manchester. This rare surviving example of timber church construction is recognised as a Grade II* listed building.

The Denton chapelry dates from 1531, when a Catholic place of worship serving as a subsidiary chapel was erected under the Diocese of Lichfield and named for St James. The present building dates from 1532. Its dedication changed to St Lawrence in 1839, and it attained parochial status in 1854. J. Medland Taylor and Henry Taylor carried out enlargement and remodelling in 1872. The timber structure retains stained glass made during the 1500s. Conservation supported by Tameside Council continued from 1993 until 2003, followed by another phase beginning in 2009.
