About St John the Baptist's Church, Atherton
St John the Baptist's Church, Atherton, is an active Church of England parish church in Market Place, Atherton, Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Diocese of Manchester and the Archdeaconry of Salford, and forms part of a united benefice with other churches in Atherton, Hindsford and Howe Bridge. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building.
The present sandstone church replaced two earlier places of worship on the site, the first dating from 1645. Designed by the Lancaster practice of Sharpe, Paley and Austin, it was constructed in stages: the chancel and part of the nave opened in 1879, while the western section and southwest tower were finished in 1896. Its design draws on late Decorated Gothic architecture and includes a hammerbeam nave roof, an alabaster font and stained glass by C. E. Kempe. Mining subsidence caused the tower to lean, while fire severely damaged the eastern end in 1991. Peter Skinner oversaw its repair and reorganisation in 1996–97.
