About St John's Church, Manchester
St John’s Church, Manchester served an Anglican parish close to Deansgate from 1769 until its demolition in 1931. The former site is now St John’s Gardens, bordered by Quay Street, Byrom Street and Lower Byrom Street. A stone cross commemorates the burial ground, where more than 22,000 people are interred, including educational benefactor John Owens and Saturday half-day campaigner William Marsden.
Edward Byrom, a founder of Manchester’s first bank, financed the church as the city’s population expanded. It was an early major example of Gothic Revival architecture in Manchester, with galleries carried on narrow cast-iron columns. Its tower was finished in 1770 and housed eight bells made by Lester and Pack. Repairs included a new roof in 1821, further work between 1874 and 1878, and the introduction of electric lighting in 1898. After the roof fell in 1924, it was reconstructed by 1926. Windows commemorated figures including Owens and Sir Thomas Bazley.
