About St Anne's Church, Hindsford
St Anne’s Church, Hindsford, stands on Tyldesley Road in Atherton, Greater Manchester. Formerly an Anglican parish church, it ceased regular ecclesiastical use in 1999 and was converted into flats during 2003 and 2004. The building is protected with Grade II listed status.
A mission church dedicated to St Anne had served Swan Island from 1873, before Hindsford became a separate parish in 1884. The foundation stone for the later church was laid in 1889, and construction was completed in 1901 for £9,000 on land donated by Lord Lilford. Designed by the Lancaster architectural practice of Austin and Paley, part of Sharpe, Paley and Austin, it accommodated 450 worshippers. The Gothic Revival building uses sandstone and Westmorland slate. Its plan includes a four-bay nave, aisles, porch, transept, two-bay chancel, vestry and tower. Notable details include Decorated tracery, diagonal buttresses, an octagonal stair turret, an embattled parapet and a pyramidal tower roof topped by a weathervane.
