About St Ann's
St Ann’s is a Roman Catholic parish church at 1043 Chester Road in Stretford, Manchester, Greater Manchester. The parish belongs to the Diocese of Salford. Built from 1862 to 1863, the church is recognised as a Grade II listed building.
The mission began in 1859 in a modest chapel on Herbert Street. E. W. Pugin designed the present church in the Gothic Revival style after Sir Humphrey de Trafford commissioned it as an anniversary gift for his wife, Lady Annette. Hardman & Co. produced its stained glass and brass fittings, while Richard Lockwood Boulton carried out the stonework. Bishop William Turner opened the building in November 1863 and consecrated it in June 1867. The presbytery and sacristy were added in 1865, followed by an organ from Manchester maker F. W. Jardine in 1868. Later work included painted scenes from St Ann’s life, new oak furnishings, wartime repairs and alterations to the sanctuary.
