About Roman Catholic Church of St Wilfrid

The Roman Catholic Church of St Wilfrid stands on George Street in Hulme, Manchester. It is a former place of worship and was designated Grade II in 1963. After the parish closed and the building was deconsecrated in 1990, it was adapted for use as a bed factory, then became an enterprise centre in 1994.

Work began in 1839 and was finished in 1842, although the intended tower was not constructed. Augustus Pugin designed the church, his only known ecclesiastical building in Manchester. It originally served a small local Irish community, while clergy from County Kerry ministered there from the 1890s to the 1930s. During sectarian tensions in July 1852, an unfounded report of a planned attack prompted a large Irish crowd to gather in its defence. The Swiss sculptor and phrenologist William Bally was among those buried there.
