About Longsight Free Christian Church
Longsight Free Christian Church was a Unitarian chapel in Longsight, Manchester, positioned where Plymouth Grove meets Birch Lane. It ceased to operate as a church in 1948 and was subsequently acquired by the BBC. The building housed vehicles used for outside broadcasts until the 1970s and was later demolished.
William Telford Gunson designed the church in an Early English Gothic manner. The Reverend William Gaskell laid its foundation stone on 23 September 1882 and led the opening on 7 June 1883. Construction cost £3,000. Grey stone formed the outer walls, complemented by dressings of Yorkshire stone. A prominent stained-glass window in the east wall, overlooking Birch Lane, commemorated John Ashton Nicholls.
