About Holy Trinity Armenian Church of Manchester
Holy Trinity Armenian Church of Manchester is an Armenian Apostolic place of worship in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester. The Grade II listed church was consecrated in 1870 and is recognised as Western Europe’s earliest Armenian church built specifically for that purpose.
Manchester’s Armenian community began to grow after textile merchants, manufacturers and shopkeepers arrived from 1835, with many settling near Upper Brook Street. Worship initially took place in a rented chapel. In 1867, Vartabed Kiuroyan began raising money for a dedicated church and vicarage, supported by dozens of donors. Royle and Bennett designed the building in a neo-Gothic style, and work started in 1869 at a cost of £2,725. It opened with its first service on Easter Day 1870. Queen Elizabeth II marked its 150th anniversary with a letter in 2020.
