About Gorton Monastery
Gorton Monastery is a former Franciscan church and friary in Gorton, Manchester. Officially dedicated to St Francis, it is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Religious services ended in 1989, after which the complex remained vacant and deteriorated. Restored and reopened in 2007, it now provides facilities for events, heritage activities and community use.
Belgian Recollect Franciscans came to Gorton in 1861, with the friary erected largely by the brothers during the following decade. Edward Welby Pugin designed the church, whose foundation stone was placed in 1866 before its consecration in 1872. This Gothic Revival building combines red and blue brickwork with sandstone details. Its unusual plan runs north to south, ending in a many-sided apse, while the ornate street frontage has three tall flying buttresses topped by statues beneath canopies. After years of neglect and the loss of furnishings, a £6 million restoration returned the church and friary to use.
