About Cross Street Chapel

Cross Street Chapel, at 29 Cross Street in Manchester city centre, is a Unitarian church belonging to the national body representing Unitarian and Free Christian congregations in Britain. Established within Manchester’s Nonconformist tradition, the congregation became closely associated with the city’s Liberal movement during the nineteenth century.

Henry Newcome gathered the congregation in 1662 following his removal from Anglican ministry under the Act of Uniformity. A purpose-built meeting place opened on Cross Street in 1694. After a Jacobite crowd attacked it in 1715, the structure was repaired and extended. The congregation adopted Unitarian worship in about 1761, when the present name also came into use. Wartime bombing demolished the chapel in December 1940. Successive replacements were completed in 1959 and 1997, and the latter remains the current building. Its Gaskell Room preserves objects associated with the writer Elizabeth Gaskell. In 2012, the church became England’s earliest worship venue authorised to conduct civil partnerships.
