About Church of St Peter, Blackley

Church of St Peter, Blackley is an Anglican place of worship on Old Market Street in Blackley, Manchester. The church is listed at Grade II*, a status granted on 20 June 1988. Within its burial ground are war graves for ten members of the armed forces who died during the First World War and seven who died during the Second World War.

Completed in 1844 for £3,162, the church was planned by E. H. Shellard in the Gothic Revival tradition and financed through the church-building commissioners. Its walls are constructed from sandstone rubble laid in courses, complemented by dressed stonework. The nave is supported by buttresses and decorated with pinnacles, leading to a substantial tower at the western end. Aisles run beside the nave inside, where the Victorian fittings remain remarkably complete. Among the most distinctive survivals are the box-style pews and other original seating.
