About Church of St Mary, Hulme
The Church of St Mary is situated beside Upper Moss Lane in Hulme, Manchester. Once used for Anglican worship, it ceased operating as a church in 1978 and now contains residential apartments. It is designated Grade II* and belongs to a historic cluster that also includes the old rectory, junior school and Moss Side People’s Centre.
Construction took place from 1853 until 1858, funded by local landowner Wilbraham Egerton to plans by architect J. S. Crowther. After Egerton died in 1856, his son, William Tatton Egerton, directed the work through to completion. Built chiefly in sandstone beneath slate roofing, the Gothic Revival structure comprises an aisled nave, a substantial chancel and a steeple positioned at its north-western corner. The slim eight-sided spire rises to 241 feet and, when completed, exceeded every other spire in northern England. Originally planned for a congregation of 1,000, the building was consecrated in November 1858. Its altar screen was subsequently transferred to the Church of the Ascension in Royce Road.
