About Church of St John the Evangelist, Cheetham Hill

The Church of St John the Evangelist, Cheetham Hill, occupies a site beside Waterloo Road in Manchester. It continues in use as an Anglican parish church, belonging to the Diocese of Manchester through the North Manchester deanery and Manchester archdeaconry. Its heritage designation is Grade II*.

Sharpe, Paley and Austin designed the church, which took shape between 1869 and 1871 with financial support from banker Lewis Loyd. Built of sandstone beneath tiled roofing, it blends Romanesque character with Early English elements. The plan incorporates side aisles, an apse-ended chancel and a south-west tower of four levels, topped with a steep pyramidal cap. The porch facing west dates from 1894. Interior highlights include decorative brick and stone, a timber pulpit featuring sunflower and leaf carvings, an 1879 sculpted altarpiece, mosaics and patterned tiles in the chancel. Kempe stained glass depicts saints, ecclesiastical leaders and Sir Philip Sidney. Hill and Son supplied the three-keyboard organ before A. Young reconstructed it in 1895.
