About Church of St Cross, Clayton
The Church of St Cross, Clayton is a Church of England parish church in Clayton, Manchester. It is a Victorian work by William Butterfield and was granted Grade II* protection in 1963.
Work began in 1862, and worship commenced four years later, though consecration by Bishop James Fraser was delayed until 1874. Butterfield’s Gothic Revival design is distinguished by red brickwork, blue-brick details and bands of pale stone. A lofty tower rises at the south-west corner, supported by slim buttresses and crowned by a sharply pitched slate roof. Inside are five-arched-bay aisles, a wooden roof structure and colourful stone and tiled patterns. Following the 1970 closure of St Peter’s in Oldham, sixteen windows of stained glass were transferred to the nave. Further glass portrays the patron saints associated with Britain and Ireland. Nine military burials lie in the churchyard, commemorating seven servicemen from the First World War and two from the Second.
