About St Thomas' Church, Halliwell
St Thomas' Church, Halliwell is an active Church of England parish church on Eskrick Street in the Halliwell district of Bolton, Greater Manchester. It forms part of the West Bolton benefice alongside five neighbouring churches and is designated Grade II*, reflecting its notable architectural and historic importance.
Built in 1874–75 for an expanding population, the church was designed by the Lancaster architectural practice Sharpe, Paley and Austin. It is constructed principally from brick, with restrained stone detailing and roofs of green slate. The broad nave has aisles, a clerestory and a chancel, while the intended northwest tower remained unfinished. Inside, exposed brickwork is complemented by a richly tiled east wall, a carved wooden reredos dating from 1893 and stained glass from the early twentieth century. The organ was made by Lewis in 1888 and later altered. A Lady Chapel was established as a memorial after the First World War, and additional vestries were built in 1931–32.
