About St Peter's Church, Bolton
St Peter’s Church, Bolton stands above the River Croal in Bolton, Greater Manchester. This Church of England place of worship continues to serve the town centre and neighbouring streets as a parish church. It belongs to the Manchester diocese and is protected at Grade II*, a status granted in 1974.
Edward Graham Paley designed the present Gothic Revival church, constructed from 1867 and completed in 1871. It succeeded a medieval building and represents the fourth church raised on this location. Archaeological finds suggest that Anglo-Saxon and Norman churches preceded the fifteenth-century structure; surviving objects from these earlier buildings are exhibited inside. Sandstone masonry and slate covering form the exterior, while the interior contains Minton floor tiles, medieval misericords and much of its original seating. The prominent west tower reaches 55 metres and was the tallest ecclesiastical tower in the old county of Lancashire. Other features include an organ dating to 1882 and a surviving tenor bell cast in 1699.
