About St Patrick's Church, Bolton

St Patrick’s Church, Bolton is a Roman Catholic parish church near the town centre, standing where Great Moor Street meets Johnson Street, west of Bradshawgate. Opened in 1861, it remains a place of worship within the parish of St Edmund and St Patrick and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Plans for a centrally located church were agreed in 1853, and Charles Holt was appointed as architect after a site had been secured. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the church opened on St Patrick’s Day in 1861. A school was established at about the same time, initially occupying a warehouse before moving to a new building on Dawes Street in 1884. Between 1907 and 1911, the interior gained a new high altar and stained glass in the eastern window. The spire’s upper section was renewed in 1946.
