About St. Maxentius
St. Maxentius is an active Church of England parish church on Bolton Road in Bradshaw, Bolton, within the Diocese of Manchester. Its parish is joined in a single benefice with five nearby churches. Dedicated to a little-known French saint associated with Poitou, it is England’s only church bearing this dedication. The detached tower from an earlier building is Grade II listed.
A chapel stood here by the early 17th century, with documentary records dating from 1641–42. A replacement of brick and stone followed in 1770, but later became both inadequate in size and poorly maintained. Edward Graham Paley designed the present Decorated Gothic building, constructed between 1863 and 1872. Its cross-shaped plan includes a long nave, transepts and chancel, while geometric tracery, a hammerbeam roof and an octagonal font dated 1550 are notable features. Stained glass includes work by Shrigley and Hunt, and the surviving rubble-built tower dates from 1640.
