About St. Mary the Virgin, Deane
St. Mary the Virgin, Deane is an active Anglican parish church in Bolton, Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Church of England’s Diocese of Manchester and sits within the Bolton deanery and archdeaconry. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Its origins date to the 14th century, when the building had a nave, chancel and west tower. The tower is the oldest surviving section and formed part of an earlier church on the site. Built from roughly dressed stone, the church has battlemented parapets and three decorated pinnacles at its eastern end. Expansion began in the early 15th century with a new chancel and north aisle. The medieval nave was replaced in the early 1500s, when a clerestory and new arcades were built. In 1884 the chancel was extended and an oak-panelled roof installed, followed by an organ chamber in 1887.
