About St John the Evangelist's Church, Farnworth
St John the Evangelist's Church, Farnworth, stands on Church Street in Farnworth, within Bolton, Greater Manchester. It remains an active Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Manchester, with a shared benefice that includes three neighbouring parishes. The building is protected at Grade II.
Thomas Hardwick designed the church, which was erected from 1824 to 1826 as a Commissioners’ church. Built of stone beneath slate roofing, it has a five-bay nave, three-bay chancel and four-stage western tower with corner turrets and a battlemented parapet. Paley and Austin added the chancel and porches during restoration work in 1873. Inside are galleries on three sides, an octagonal font, 1874 furnishings and stained glass showing Christ’s baptism and crucifixion. An 1894 pipe organ was later replaced by an electronic instrument, while eight bells cast in 1954 remain part of the church.
