About St James' Church, Daisy Hill
St James' Church, Daisy Hill, serves a Church of England parish in Westhoughton, part of Bolton in Greater Manchester. It continues to be used for parish worship and falls within Manchester Diocese, under Bolton’s deanery and archdeaconry. Its architectural and historic importance is recognised through Grade II* protection.
Sharpe, Paley and Austin designed the church, which was erected during 1879–81 and consecrated by Manchester’s bishop on 22 April 1881. Mrs Makant and Miss Haddock, who were sisters, covered the £6,500 construction cost. The fabric is principally brick, enhanced with terracotta and limited stonework beneath slate-covered roofs. Inside are exposed brick surfaces and contrasting timber roof forms. Significant details include a five-level bell turret crowned by a weathercock, Morris & Co. glazing illustrating the Epiphany, Edith Norris glass from 1943, Shrigley and Hunt’s 1924 reredos, and W. E. Richardson’s three-manual organ, installed in 1883.
