About St Peter's Church, Ashton-under-Lyne

St Peter’s Church, Ashton-under-Lyne is an active Church of England parish church on Manchester Road in Greater Manchester. It belongs to the Parish of the Good Shepherd and the Diocese of Manchester. The church is Grade II listed and was built with financial support from the Church Building Commission.

Francis Goodwin designed the church, which was constructed from 1821 to 1824 using dressed stone and a slate roof. Its seven-bay nave ends in an angled vestry serving as the chancel, while a three-stage tower rises at the west end. Interior galleries stand on cast-iron columns. The east rose window contains 1830s glass by David Evans showing the apostles. Samuel Renn made the three-manual organ in 1831, and J. J. Binns rebuilt it in 1959. Eight bells, produced by Mears and Stainbank in 1871, form the church’s ring.
