About St Thomas of Canterbury Church
St Thomas of Canterbury Church is a Roman Catholic parish church at 557-559 High Road, Woodford Green, Greater London, beside Trinity Catholic High School. Franciscan friars have cared for the parish from its beginnings and continue to serve the church. Their British office is based in the adjoining friary, while the Becket Centre occupies a renovated part of that building.
The parish began in 1894 with a temporary iron church, following an appeal launched by the Franciscans in 1878. The present church and friary were designed by the priest and architect Alexander Scoles. Cardinal Vaughan laid the foundation stone in May 1895, and Mass was first celebrated there in May 1896. Henrietta Pelham-Clinton, Duchess of Newcastle, met the £10,000 building cost, and the church was consecrated in July 1896 after its debts were cleared. She also supported the associated schools, friary and religious community, and was buried in the church’s St Francis chapel in 1913.
