About Trinity Church
Trinity Church is on Cheam Road near the heart of Sutton, Greater London. Home to a congregation shared by the Methodist and United Reformed traditions, it has Grade II listed status. Its prominent site, substantial scale and distinctive silhouette have made it a recognisable Sutton landmark.
The present building opened on 2 October 1907 under the name Trinity Wesleyan Church, succeeding an older chapel close by. Following Methodist unification, it took the name Trinity Methodist Church in 1932. The current joint arrangement dates from 1972, when Sutton’s Methodist and Congregational communities came together. Architects Gordon and Gunton created the church in a Gothic idiom, combining rough Kentish stonework with pale Bath stone detailing. Its layout incorporates aisles, transepts, a nave, an angular-ended sanctuary, an attached hall and a tower at the south-west corner. Above the tower rises an uncommon open lantern and crown spire, embellished with pinnacles, carved braces and ball-flower motifs.
